Does being Gay or Bisexual really define our identity? Or is it just part of a larger whole? Is being Gay or Bisexual really a big deal? Are we more alike or different than our Straight brothers?

The LifeGuard Program (men's program) of The Center Orange County has invited Professor John Ibson of California State University, Fullerton to answer these and other questions in more depth. Bring your experiences, your observations, and more importantly, your questions to the table!

FACILITATOR BIO
Contemplating on the issues of gender and sexuality, Professor Ibson concentrates his research on the meanings of masculinity in America's past and present. Building on his past research on ethnic diversity and conflict in society, Professor Ibson has extrapolated his findings into the realm of male identitiy and intimacy, rivalry and common ground. Detailed Bio (pdf, 18k).

Professor Ibson received his Ph.D. in History of American Civilization from Brandeis University and has been on the faculty of Cal State Fullerton's American studies department for the past 35 years. He teaches courses such as The American Male, Sexual Orientations and American Culture, 1960s America, Prejudice and American Culture, and The Body and American Culture.

All groups are headed by a staff or guest Facilitator and participants are encouraged to get involved and assist or give input in group outings and/or planning. (Those seeking therapy should note the reference to the LifeCounsel! group below.

50 and Frisky!
Lunchtime meeting: 12:30pm – 2:00pm
Every 2nd Friday of each month

This is a social group dedicated to the particular needs of Gay/Bisexual/Curious men from the ages 50 and up! This free, fun, topic-oriented get-together provides a forum for men to talk about what's going on in their lives and to make new friends.

LifeBound! [Guy's Going Out]
Days and times to be determined - - Check Calendar
This will be a casual and informal social outing led by a staff facilitator and recognized Center OC volunteer(s). We will be going out to dinner, watching a movie (or both!), going bowling, having potlucks, daytrips, etc. This is a chance to get together and experience the camaraderie and social support of other Gay/Bisexual/Curious-identified men! Please note that LifeBound! events and times change according to participant wishes.

LifeLessons! [Workshops]
Specific dates - Check Calendar
With various topics ranging from cooking to travel to relationships, this component of the men's program provides practical and thoughtful lessons related to living life to its fullest. Put on your thinking cap and let's learn something new! Food and soda will be provided. Please check calendar for upcoming workshops.

LifeAction! [Men's Program Advisory Committee]
Scheduled Quarterly, on specific dates - Check Calendar
This is a quarterly meeting for the advisory committee of The Center OC's LifeGuard Program (Men's Program). This is open to all those who regularly participate in the weekly social chats and who want to have a say in where we go, what we do, what we want to talk about! This is YOUR chance to co-create YOUR group! Pizza and soda will be provided at these meetings, so reserve your seat!

LifeLine! [Peer Health Educator Training]
Scheduled on specific dates - Check Calendar
This is a special workshop dedicated to the training of the LifeGuard Program's (Men's Program) volunteers! If you want to learn how to be more involved in the health of the Gay/Bisexual/Curious men's community come join in on this very informative--and very fun--training session! We will learn about approaching and engaging different types of personalities as well as how to relay important information about The Center OC's resources and the basics of HIV and STD prevention. Lunch will be provided!

LifeCounsel! [Men's Program Therapy Referral]
Days and times to be determined
Since some needs may not be met by the social group structure, a formal men’s therapy group is offered at the Brafford Wellness Center. Unlike the informal, topic-oriented and open structure of the LifeTalk! gatherings, this is a closed, formal, issues-oriented therapy group. Groups normally meet at ten week intervals with a cost of $10 per session and are under the direct supervision of a trained counselor. Please contact Marilyn Livote at 714-534-0862 ext. 323 or email her at marilynl@thecenteroc.org for more details. Of course, participants of the men’s therapy group are more than welcome to contribute to the activities of the LifeGuard Program!
